Usage of Carbon Steel

Low Carbon Steel less than 0.15%C
Due to its low level of carbon, it's difficult to improve low carbon steel less than 0.15%C through quenching and tempering.
Thus, in many cases, cold working is conducted to improve its intensity.
For long steel, sheet steel or steel ship, this type of carbon steel is used with a good cold-working property and a less amount of silicon.
Carbon Steel with 0.16 ~ 0.25%C
This type of carbon steel thinks machining more important than intensity.
Carbon steel around 0.15%C is widely used as steel for cold working.
Carbon steel around 0.25%C has a wide range of usages including bolt, nuts, pins and others.
This type of carbon steel is widely used for thin carbon-steel pipe material.
Carbon Steel with 0.25 ~ 0.35%C
It is easy to perform forging, casting, machining and welding on this type of carbon steel. Also material can be improved through thermal refining.
This type of carbon steel can be strengthened when quenching and tempering is conducted on this.
For axle or ordinary mechanical parts can be used after refining or coarsening uneven crystal grain evenly, so that annealing and normalizing should be conducted after rolling or forging.
Carbon Steel with 0.35 ~ 0.45%C
This type of carbon steel is used when intensity is low in the case of relatively big forged products or when the relatively high intensity is needed after thermal refining.
This is suitable for parts that need high ductility like axle or crankshaft.
It is unsuitable for welding as it contains a lot of carbon.
Carbon Steel with 0.45 ~ 0.60%C
While this type of carbon steel has brittleness and a high level of quenching, it is easy for it to have quenching cracks and heat crack. It also has insufficient ductility. The usage of this type of carbon steel does not vary.
High Carbon Steel more than 0.6%C
It is rare to use high carbon steel more than 0.6%C. However, it is used for products requiring durability of abrasion and high yield point.
